Make Good Art - Neil Gaiman

"Life is sometimes hard. Things go wrong, in life and in love and in business and in friendship and in health and in all the other ways that life can go wrong. And when things get tough, this is what you should do. Make good art. I'm serious. Husband runs off with a politician? Make good art. Leg crushed and then eaten by mutated boa constrictor? Make good art. IRS on your trail? Make good art. Cat exploded? Make good art. Somebody on the Internet thinks what you do is stupid or evil or it's all been done before? Make good art. Probably things will work out somehow, and eventually time will take the sting away, but that doesn't matter. Do what only you do best. Make good art." - Neil Gaiman.

Lake Tahoe in the Summer

My definition of a perfect summer can be summarized in the above photos. Lake Tahoe is just as beautiful as it's seen on those postcards! I was utterly amazed by how blue and clear the lake was. We swam in the cold water and later rented a Reinell 185 for an hour to sail aimlessly while enjoying the view Lake Tahoe has to offer.

Macho Men Party 2014

Not too long ago, I hosted a small dinner party for the boys to celebrate their birthdays at my place. First time feeding these hommies and luckily, they survived my food! If you look closely to those icons, their moustaches are actually made of two (flexed) biceps ;)

Yum: Nutella Brownies Cups!

I still cannot believe how easy it was to bake these yummy Nutella brownies cups!! Three ingredients are all you need - 10tbsp of flour, 2 eggs, and 1 cup of Nutella! So yum so easy. Definitely going to bake some more of these next week.

Food selfie

My food-selfie game is going pretty intense lately, haha! I've been making my own brunch these past few days and I gotta admit that my favorite part is still photographing them :) In case you're wondering, all these photos were taken by my iPhone.

What I've been cooking (from left to right): Indonesian fried rice, Nutella french toast with blueberry sauce, roasted veggies with egg, prawn aglio olio, scrambled egg with butter crackers, and Shin ramyun with milk.

Taking a new direction on blogging

I have been contemplating taking my blog to a new direction these past few weeks because of how bad I am at updating it regularly. Ever since I started Inspiredly Insane, I wanted this to be a platform to expose my work in a more casual manner. Putting new work up to my portfolio site is a hassle and nobody checks out a portfolio site religiously anyway. If you know me personally or have been following my work, you'd know that I am CONSTANTLY making stuff and taking pictures and I find it extremely rewarding knowing that there are people out there who see them. That's the major reason why Inspiredly Insane is an important part of my creative life.

If you've been a faithful reader, you'd know that almost all of the stuff I posted here are artwork made by me and photos taken by me. But, being a grad student doesn't really give me all the time in the world to make typography posters or wander around the city to take photos anymore. My life isn't sufficiently interesting to be worth a post every single day/week considering that I spend most of my days sitting in front of a laptop. So I figure maybe it's time for a change. Instead of being so self-absorbed with my work, I probably should start posting stuff that actually inspire me. One of the design blogs that I've been faithful to is Swiss-Miss, by Tina Roth Eisenberg. I just LOVE the simplicity of it and how it makes reading it a painless experience. So, starting next week, I'm going to start doing what Tina does best - finding cool stuff on the Internet and sharing them with you guys. Cool?

I'm gonna start by leaving these two songs that I've played 9999 times in the office this week:
Seen It All - Jake Bugg | Back to the Earth - Jason Mraz (oh the things I'd do to witness this live performance! A+++)

Thanks for reading. Have a great weekend!

New Stuff on Thatfandomshop

I have a couple of days left before Summer semester kicks off and I don't want my free time to go to waste so these happened. They are requests sent to me a decade ago on Thatfandomtype and I've been delaying them since last semester (because hello, midpoint review and all) but I'm glad I took the time to finish them :) Check these out on Thatfandomshop.

Yo guys, I'm on VSCO Grid now! Loooove everything about this beautiful photo sharing app, I should've done this sooner. If you've been following me on Instagram, you'd known that I mostly post photos of food and occasionally coffee, so yeah my VSCO will be pretty much the same :) Find me there!

I got a chance to be a part of AAU Spring Show (also got to sit down for a brief industry review and introduce my work to them which was nerve-wracking and totally awesome) this year so with that in mind, I had to make some minor refinement on my portfolio website. Check it out!

Spring Break in L.A

Can't believe that my blog was last updated three months ago? I apologise for getting worse at updating it. Spring 2014 was an exhausting semester, but definitely the most fun one just yet! Me and a couple of the girls road-tripped to L.A during Spring Break and I got the chance to co-drive Sebastian (yes I name my car, ssshhh) on PCH, which is the coolest highway that was ever built by human ever. A couple of places that we visited: Griffith Observatory, Getty Villa, Santa Monica, Venice Canals, and Big Sur.

My Galentine's Day

My beautiful readers, how did you all spend your Galentine's Day? I followed the rule of Leslie Knope and started the day with a lovely brunch (at Dottie's True Blue Cafe) with some of my lady friends and went ice skating afterwards. The latter was a suicide mission for me because I suck at skating and I don't think I'll ever want to do that ever again. What about you?

Wedding Invites - Thanh & Geraldine

I've been working with a lovely couple from Australia, Thanh and Geraldine, for their wedding collaterals for the past couple of weeks and we decided to go with the above design for their final invite. Thoughts? Here are some other proposed design.

It's a form of socially acceptable insanity

"Falling in love is a crazy thing to do. It's kind of like a form of socially acceptable insanity." - Her.

I'm planning to make as many 'love' related artwork as possible as we're entering the season of love *wink *wink*. Have you watched Spike Jonze's Her?

The Mindy Project - Valentine's Day Card

Did you guys watch the jaw-dropping mid-season finale of The Mindy Project? The quote on this Valentine's Day card came from the letter that Danny typed for Cliff Mindy. [screams internally]

2014 is going to be my year!

Snapped this photo earlier while having my afternoon coffee.
I don't mean to brag or anything (ok maybe a little) but 2014 (or maybe just this first month) has been a REALLY productive year (or month) for me. I've been making A LOT of art lately, I managed to give my thesis project a major face lift (video is still in the making), I get to bake some CNY cookies with le mom almost everyday this week, and I've been working on some wedding collaterals for a lovely couple in Australia. All in all, I still have time to socialize (and by socializing I mean grabbing a friend to go to Su-mo-boo and stuffing our faces with their spicy Buta Noodle)! I have a feeling this is going to be my year. Just sayin. I wish you all a wonderful weekend ahead! x

The Fault in Our Stars on Thatfandomshop

"That's the thing about pain.. it demands to be felt." - John Green, The Fault in Our Stars.
I'm glad to say that my passion project, Thatfandomshop, has been going great so far. The amount of love given by friends from Tumblr & Twitter are so overwhelming, so thank you! x

Baking CNY cookies

Today I spent some time with le mother baking her famous CNY cookies. Well, I wasn't exactly baking, but hello, did you see how adorable those poop cookies that I made? Uh yeah. So, why aren't you following me on instagram? Muahaha. Seriously. @nameisirene

Thatfandomtype x Thatfandomshop

Hello! How's your 2014 going so far? Mine has been insanely productive, especially this week. I've launched a little side project called THATFANDOMTYPE where I created typographic posters based on quotes from famous (pop-culture) fandoms like Firefly, Sherlock, Game of Thrones, and of course, my favorite darling show, Castle. I'm also selling the artwork on Society6 under the name THATFANDOMSHOP. This is an exciting new journey for me. Making pop-culture related artwork has always been my favorite procrastination project and I'm glad I can finally bring it to a new level this year.

Drawing the line on ‘design favors’

Being a creative means that you'll constantly get asked to do 'design favors’ from friends and occasionally, your aunt's second cousin's sister's next door neighbor. A ‘design favor’ usually means that the designer is doing the work for free. I, personally, have done many of those "favors" for my dear friends in the past and I don’t, in anyway, regret doing them. I did those willingly for the reason that I know they approached me because they actually like and respect my work and I enjoyed working with them.

I don’t, however, appreciate friends who approach me and ask for a ‘design favor’ just because they need someone who knows how to use ‘photoshop’ and don't wanna spend any penny on it. I’m 99% sure that they are not even familiar with my work at all. Second, most of these people came and approached me without making an effort to at least ask for a quote? This is what outrages me the most. If your friend owns a diner, you don’t go in, have a meal and just leave without the intention of paying. If your friend owns a clothing store, you don’t go in, grab a few clothes that you like and leave without paying, don’t you? So why should you treat a designer like that? Every time a friend did this to me, not only did he/she disrespect my work as a designer, they also disrespected me as a friend.

What’s even more outrageous is, I’ve once received an email from a total stranger in India asking me to send them one of the wedding invites that I designed so that they can use it, for free. FOR FREE. I trashed that email right away and didn’t even bother to reply. Another ‘kind’ of approach that I truly loathe with the entirety of my being is the promise of exposure in exchange for payment. Yep, those go to trash right away too. Let me get this straight, there’s no such thing as free design.

“Of course, many people who would have you work for free value attention far differently than you or I might.. No, designing a logo for the zoo for free is probably not valuable either. And the argument that it is valuable (it's good for your portfolio!) is inevitably selfish and irrational. The lions get their food, the vets get paid and even the guy selling peanuts doesn't do it for free…” - Seth Godin.
The point I’m trying to make is, you should ALWAYS treat a designer with respect and this is how you respect a designer: if you want our creative help, at least make an effort to familiarize yourself with our work and NEVER assume that we’re gonna do it for free. If you’re low on budget, the least you can do is say so and offer to buy us a cup of coffee in exchange for our service. Respect, my friend. Respect. It's not that hard.

Check this out too.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (poster remake)

“To see the world, things dangerous to come to, to see behind walls, draw closer,to find each other and to feel. That is the purpose of life.” - The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)
